Position Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Reports To: Outreach Manager
Position Summary
The Volunteer Coordinator is the primary point of contact for the “lifecycle” of a volunteer. This role focuses on the recruitment, training, and retention of 50-100 active volunteers to ensure adult learners receive high-quality tutoring in a safe and supportive environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Screening: Respond to volunteer service inquiries, coordinate information sessions, conduct thorough background screenings, and maintain accurate match records.
- Training & Support: Lead new tutor training and continuing education; prepare and maintain volunteer handbooks and training manuals; ensure tutors are equipped with evidence-based instructional strategies.
- Volunteer Retention & Recognition: Develop and implement a formal volunteer appreciation and recognition program to improve long-term retention.
- Volunteer Management: Maintain volunteer job descriptions, conduct volunteer performance reviews, provide instructional materials and guidance, and keep volunteer schedule.
- Performance Monitoring: Regularly visit volunteers at tutoring sites to provide coaching, observe sessions, and ensure adherence to organizational standards.
- Matching & Placement: Collaborate with Student Services to identify student needs; match tutors with adult learners based on academic goals, personality fit, and availability.
- Marketing Support: Maintain volunteer recruitment marketing materials (print, web, social media) and collect tutor/student success stories.
- Risk Management: Ensure all volunteer activities comply with safety protocols and liability requirements.
- Team Collaboration: Train Literacy Alliance team on volunteer processes and roles they play in that process.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Active Roster: Maintain a minimum of 75 active, matched volunteers at any given time.
- Retention Rate: Achieve a 70% or higher volunteer retention rate over 12 months.
- Matching Efficiency: Reduce the average “time-to-match” (from training completion to student pairing) to under 21 days.
Backup Responsibilities
- Backup for Outreach Manager: Assisting with the data entry for grant reports and maintaining internal compliance records.
- Backup for Student Services: Assisting with student assessments, proctoring, and responding to student inquiries during high-volume time-frames.
- Mission First Support: Be prepared to adapt to changes in assignments and duties.
Qualifications
- Program, project, or volunteer coordination experience or related expertise.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience in volunteer or AmeriCorps management.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; detail-oriented, good interpersonal skills, and able to manage multiple tasks/deadlines at once.
- Ability to develop, organize and conduct training sessions and presentations.
- Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
- Experience with and affinity for Google Workspace productivity suite.
- Driver license with reliable transportation and be available to work nights and weekends, including overnight travel when required for events or training.

- Starting salary of $48,000
