Position Summary
The Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida’s mission is to improve the self-sufficiency, economic mobility, and quality of life for adults through continuing education and literacy skill-building, delivered through personalized, flexible, goal-based tutoring and small-group instruction. Services include literacy, numeracy, GED preparation, and workforce certifications, provided at no charge to low-income adult learners.
The Literacy Alliance is seeking a part-time instructor to conduct in-person adult education classes between one and three weeknights in the early evening at the Jessie Ball duPont Center in downtown Jacksonville. Instructors provide comprehensive adult literacy, high school equivalency, and workforce certification lessons for adult learners.
The Literacy Alliance is prioritizing the recruitment of part-time evening instructors.
Primary Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery: Provide high-quality instruction across core subjects, including Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA), Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Utilize evidence-based best practices in adult education to manage classroom environments and hybrid learning sessions effectively.
Curriculum & Lesson Planning: Develop and prepare contextualized lesson plans tailored to the diverse needs and goals of adult students. Align classroom curriculum and learning objectives with state adult education standards and student assessment data.
Data Management & Compliance: Maintain meticulous records of student attendance, instructional hours, and academic progress. Record all student communication and data within the organizational database to ensure program compliance and accurate reporting.
Student Engagement & Retention: Communicate professionally with students outside of scheduled class time to encourage attendance, resolve barriers to learning, and improve overall program retention and completion rates.
Assessment & Monitoring: Proactively monitor student instructional hours and collaborate with the Student Services team to ensure students complete post-instruction assessments in a timely manner.
Volunteer & Site Coordination: Manage and support volunteers assigned to classrooms or specific students. Maintain positive, professional relationships with site partners (community centers and corrections facilities) to ensure seamless program delivery.
Team Collaboration: Participate in organizational initiatives, including volunteer recruitment and internal workgroups. Provide backup support through substitute teaching and learning lab assistance as needed.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Student Persistence: Achieve a target percentage of students reaching the initial 10-hour instruction milestone and subsequent recommended hours for reassessment.
- Assessment Completion: Ensure that at least 70% of eligible students complete a post-instruction assessment.
- Educational Gains: Meet or exceed organizational targets for students advancing an educational functioning level (EFL) or successfully passing GED sub-tests/attaining a GED diploma.
Backup Responsibilities
- Learning Lab Support: Providing secondary coverage for learning lab activities and student walk-ins.
- Instructional Coverage: Serving as the primary substitute for other ABE instructors during absences.
- Mission First Support: Be prepared to adapt to changes in assignments and duties to support the Literacy Alliance mission.
Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience in adult education, corrections education, or a related instructional field.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, or a relevant field.
- Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to simplify complex concepts for diverse learners.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced experience with Google Workspace and student data management systems.
- Adaptability: Ability to work independently in various environments, including correctional facilities, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Logistics: Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation; availability for evening and weekend work as required for class schedules or training.
