Anita Edwards (middle L), Literacy Alliance’s Chief Operating Officer, stands amongst this year’s grant recipients at the WGA Member Forum on May 20.

The Literacy Alliance proudly earned recognition as a 2025 grant recipient of the Women’s Giving Alliance (WGA), an initiative of The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. As a leading philanthropic giving circle, WGA has invested over $10 million in grants to improve the lives of women and girls. This year, WGA chose the Literacy Alliance as one of ten nonprofits to receive funding under its new focus: Addressing Violence Against Women & Girls.

With this grant, we will expand our Survivor Education Program. This trauma-informed, women-only adult education initiative supports survivors of violence through personalized instruction in literacy, GED preparation, and digital skills. The program originally launched in partnership with the Women’s Center of Jacksonville with funding from The Jim Moran Foundation.

This expansion will allow us to partner with other women-serving organizations. The Literacy Alliance will focus on creating small group classes led by female educators in safe, supportive environments. This joint effort will work alongside local organizations that serve women impacted by violence without adding to their workload. This support strengthens the mission of the partners and the Literacy Alliance to promote self-sufficiency, economic opportunity, and a better quality of life for adults through continued education and literacy skill building.
