Michelle’s words of wisdom, “Get up and get it,” if you want a better life.
I started GED classes at the jail in June 2025. After struggling with addiction and homelessness prior to my incarceration, I was eager to get started on bettering myself anyway I could. I found out I was pregnant while in jail, so I knew I needed to change and do something for myself and my now two children.
I got out and continued my classes at Literacy Alliance, and became an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I was taking any opportunity I could to pave a way for myself. I knew (and still know) that I had to get up and get it if I wanted a better life. Nobody was coming to save me or do it for me.
Finally, I hunkered down and got my classes done and took all four tests in two days because my son Elias is due to be born in 3 days!! Though I was intimidated and honestly doubted myself after each test, I passed, and I’m now a high school graduate!! I couldn’t have done it without God and the people supporting me along the way.
I’m forever grateful to Literacy Alliance for encouraging me every step of the way! With God anything is possible. Don’t ever give up on yourself, you’re worth every effort!
