Keltcy learned about the Literacy Alliance through her former employer, Dollar General. She was a store manager when she was pregnant with her son, and she used maternity leave as an opportunity to earn her GED diploma.
After leaving school in the eighth grade and attempting to earn her diploma three different times, It took her about 2 months to finish which is unusual, though not impossible. It depends on a person’s knowledge level and commitment of attending class and study time.
She took classes for a few months and passed her first GED section on September 8th and her final one on September 24th. She credits her ability to continue education, “Classes are available online or in person which was extremely convenient for me with my son only being a few months old.”
Surrounded by family, friends, volunteers, and supporters, she and 80 other graduates celebrated this milestone that will open the door to new careers, stronger families, and brighter futures. As this year’s valedictorian, Keltcy, shared, “The Literacy Alliance really helped me believe it’s not too late to focus on new career opportunities that I originally missed out on. The best support for me personally was the motivated teachers; they want you to get your degree just as much as you want it, if not more.”
Keltcy actually dropped out of school with an 8th grade education because her step-father passed away from leukemia, and she needed to get a job. This loss greatly impacted her life. However, health care has become a special interest of her, and she always wanted to do something in the medical field to help support patient families.
Next up she is planning to continue with the Literacy Alliance to complete the new Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) program, then her goal is to get into a business operations degree program and use her store management experience to hopefully enter into a health care administration role.
“I would recommend the Literacy Alliance because they are truly amazing people, and it is 100% free. It is by far one of the most helpful and caring environments for personal growth. The only person you’re hurting by not taking advantage of this program is yourself.”
Keltcy has goals, and we can’t wait to see all her accomplishments for her and her family.
